CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Adrian Cinnabar
Age: 23

World Information:

Adrian's world is similar in structure to that of Earth, albeit on a much smaller scale. The region is divided into two main continents flanked by several small islands and other unpopulated landmasses typically located in much colder, inhospitable climates. The region is governed by the royal Minthia family of Perovskia: King Theodore, Queen Caroline, and their only son and heir to the throne, Prince Peter.

(Note: While the entire world itself isn't called Perovskia, I'm going to refer to it as Perovskia for simplicity's sake while talking about it in this since much of Adrian's story takes place in both the kingdom and its surrounding areas.)

Perovskia is a modern fantasy world that's very similar to Earth circa the 21st Century. Any sort of advanced technology is based around magic as opposed to typical energy sources such as electricity, so while Perovskia does see much of the same technology as exists on Earth- things like cars, radios, televisions, etc- it's operation and use isn't necessarily spread throughout the entire world. There are still many parts of Perovskia that function perfectly well with less modern ameneties (or some without any at all), either by choice or happenstance due to location. Magic alone is considered to be a more "old school" sort of tech to the population, so basically think DnD world aesthetic but your character can have a cell-phone if you want.

Other than magic and magic-fueled technology, the world is populated by various species, though the most common of them are strictly humanoid such as humans, elves, etc. with a few exceptions. However, since magical energy is a sort of driving force in the world for a lot of things, it is not uncommon to find races that have been influenced by the concentrations of magic in the areas that they live. Another example of this would be the Mimics of Thaumica, a small village on the far coast consisting of humanoids who are capable of perfectly mimicing the appearance of anything they see. Examples of this sort of thing can be found all across the region.

The ability to wield magic among the people is quite prevalent in some regions as it's been documented that certain schools of magic and their ability to command them will be inherited through family bloodlines. (Adrian's family are all pyrokinetics, for example). While this is not exclusive to families, learning to wield magic otherwise is difficult and takes many years to master.

Character Information:

Beginning:
Adrian Cinnabar grew up in a large family in the Iseasha Desert south of Perovskia. He was a middle child in a slew of six other siblings (two older sisters and a brother, and a younger sister and brother), growing up alongside his parents and part of his extended family. Despite the household being constantly busy, he never remembered wanting for anything. They lived modestly, sure, but they were happy with their life and prioritized the family above all else. Of course, this was knowledge that Adrian would only be able to reflect on in his later years, because as a child he was frustrated, feeling overlooked and ignored. This led to bouts of acting out as he would regularly get into fights with his siblings or cause other sorts of mischief around their little town, earning himself a reputation as a troublemaker.

Marketplace Incident/Transformation:
At age 12, Adrian was brought on a trip to an outdoor market with his mother and a few of his older siblings. Though meant to stay close to one of his older sisters, Adrian ended up slipping away and wandering deeper into the market where sometimes some merchants would sell illegal magical artifacts under the table. What began as a curious excursion would turn into a mistake that Adrian would regret for the rest of his life as he came upon a stall ran by an older witch hawking her wares. A brooch had caught the boy's eye- a orange-red jewel crafted in the shape of a beetle- that he ended up stealing off the table while she wasn't looking. Unbeknownst to him, the brooch had been embued with some sort of magic in its lifetime- Adrian never knew if it was the item's intended use, or if it was cursed to dissuade pickpocketers- but not long after taking the item did he find himself undergoing a transformation into the form he lives as today. Part human, part insect. Terrified, in pain, and fearful of his family's response to what he'd done (as well as his new monstrous appearance) Adrian fled the market and eventually the city itself, but it was clear that his misfortune wasn't over. The sun had begun to go down by that point and the Desert was known for reaching low temperatures at night, something his new body couldn't seem to handle well. Thus, too cold to move and having become lost among the massive dunes, Adrian spent the night alone.

Adrian would be unable to return to the city for some time as it took him a while to relocate the city due to several large, rolling sandstorms that drove him back to find shelter. Fortunately, his new form was stronger and able to withstand the heat during the day, despite not handling the chill of the night nearly as well. Eventually, desperation and homesickness finally spurred him on to make the rest of the trip back home. Upon making it back, however, Adrian would find his family home in dissarray, burned and abandoned. He would not see his parents or his siblings again, their current status unknown to him. He would never know whether his family's disappearance was due to freak circumstances, or some more direct revenge for the crime he'd committed. Regardless, from that point on, Adrian was orphaned.

Age 12-17
Adrian would spend the next year of his life living on the streets of the small settlement of Iseasha, clinging to familiar surroundings in the hopes that his family might return for him. Living this way was terribly difficult; most would recoil from him in fear or revulsion due to thinking him to be some sort of beast from the dunes, though a few would take pity on him and provide him with food, sometimes even shelter. On rare occasions he would be able to find odd jobs to work for more empathetic folk in the city, but this was doomed to be short-lived. His new form brought with it abilities he didn't know how to control on top of interacting with his existing pyrokinesis (which at the time hadn't yet fully matured into an ability he had 100% control over to begin with), resulting in many accidents that would get him kicked back out onto the streets. Over time, Adrian would become closed off and distrustful of most, concerned with self-preservation above all else. At age 17, he would finally leave Iseasha and make for the Kingdom where he knew no one: Perovskia.

Age 17-20
Though unable- or maybe unwilling- to find lodging in the kingdom itself, Adrian instead would spend the next few months constructing a home for himself in the Idai Forest just beyond the kingdom's borders, close enough to visit for necessities but far enough away that he could live alone. He would build a rudimentary treehouse to accomplish this, able to easily travel up into the boughs with the wings his insect-body granted him. From age 17-20, Adrian lived life this way, frequenting the kingdom to pickpocket enough coin to survive on when he wasn't taking food from outdoor markets outright. He'd learned to take little, just enough to keep himself going, so that he could come and go unnoticed. By this point he'd also learned to forage- having learned years ago that his body now could no longer tolerate meat of any kind- able to find all manner of edible plants in the wild to sustain himself.

Misha:
Adrian was more-or-less accepting of his lot in life at that point, having managed to carve out something of a manageable existance for himself. His priorities would shift, however, the day he met Misha: a young 10-year old boy living on the streets of Perovskia, much like he had back in Iseasha. Misha had lost his Grandmother just a few weeks prior to coming across Adrian, and while his appearance typically scared most other children he'd ever come across, Misha was more curious than afraid. This would lead to the boy sneaking out of the kingdom, following Adrian back to his home in the forest, much to his dismay. Wanting nothing to do with the child, Adrian would vow to find a way to get the boy to an orphanage in the kingdom so he could return to his own life. Misha made no pains to make much of a case for staying either, as the two butted heads near-constantly. Yet despite Adrian's threats to get rid of him, days turned into weeks, and weeks into months. At some point an entire year had gone by, yet Misha still remained with Adrian, living with him in the forest and even going on excursions with him to the kingdom.

Wanted:
One day, Misha became very sick.

Winters in Perovskia were a lot colder than Adrian had ever been used to back in the desert, despite the temperatures dropping very low some nights. Winter was also the worst time for Adrian in particular, who struggled to get up and moving when it was very cold, leading to fewer and fewer ventures away from the forest in preference of keeping sheltered. The conditions weren't favorable for Adrian, much less a young boy who was only human. What started out as a cold rapidly worsened as the nights grew colder and pneumonia set in, and soon Adrian realized that if he didn't do something soon, Misha might not survive the colder upcoming nights. He would try to keep them both warm using his fire magic, but it simply wasn't enough. Misha needed medicine, and more food than they were able to reasonably procure to recover.

Adrian would take more and more dips into the kingdom, his usual skimming of the markets turning into thefts that were a lot harder to miss. Proper medicine was even harder to come by, yet he would steal anything promising from merchants in the hopes that it would be what Misha needed. Adrian had already been arrested a time or two at a younger age for petty theft, so by this point he wasn't entirely unknown to the kingdom's guard. It wasn't long before Adrian's boldness would catch up to him, resulting in him stealing a case of various items from a caravan that he'd believed to be a store of medicines being delivered to the kingdom to restock its infirmary. He wasn't wrong about the caravan heading to the kingdom, but instead about the contents of what he'd stolen: personal effects of the royal family that were both not only very important, but also extremely valuable. By the time Adrian returned with the case to an even sicker Misha and realized his mistake, it was too late. The entire kingdom was on alert to capture the thief, and with enough eye-witness accounts, Adrian soon found himself with the kingdom's guard flooding the forest he called home.

CW: (falsely) presumed kidnapping/child neglect

Desperate and knowing that the guard would take him away with no telling what would happen to Misha, Adrian made his final error by taking the boy and fleeing deeper into the forest. A brief chase would ensue, but ultimately the cold- as it had begun to snow by this point- would slow Adrian to the point where the guards were able to cut him off. Adrian was swiftly apprehended, not only branded as a thief and danger to the kingdom, but a kidnapper as well. The guards were zealous to exact justice on the troublemaker that had plauged their kingdom for years, and as such had no reason to believe that Adrian's intentions were anything but bad as they dragged him back to the kingdom. The only positive was that Misha had been taken into their custody, hopefully to receive treatment that Adrian couldn't provide him. It would be the last time Adrian would ever see him.

Imprisonment/Escape/Present-Day:
With the goods returned and Misha being treated, Adrian would be taken into custody by the Perovskian guard to be tried for his crimes. Whether or not he would be given any sort of fair trial didn't partciularly matter to Adrian, as he had no intention of sticking around for it. As far as he was concerned, the entire population would see him as a monster and nothing more. There would be an outcry if he were not punished in whatever way they deemed fit, and for a time as he sat in his cell he even wondered if maybe he should just accept it. In the end however, self-preservation and stubbornness won out, and Adrian would make his escape in the late hours of the night just a few weeks after his capture. The kingdom would underestimate his ability to not only shape fire, but shapeshift his body, the combination of the two giving him enough strength and leverage to dig through the now-molten stone of his cell. The guards would return to an empty cell and a renewed alarm for Adrian's arrest, now a highly wanted criminal.

Unable to return to not just the kingdom but to his previous home in the forest, Adrian was left with no choice but to abandon everything and return to the desert he'd lived in previously. Unwilling to bring ire onto his previous home- and also perhaps not able to bear the memories it still held- Adrian would skip over Iseasha and travel to a western portion of the desert known simply as the Badlands for its harsh conditions. Hardly anyone lived out there, with most of the population made up of bandits. Adrian would become a wanderer of the desert for the next three years, only able to handle the heat due to his non-human form, setting up camps and living temporarily in place to place before moving on to the next. Never settling, always drifting.

It was the perfect place for a monster.

Personality:

Since a young age, Adrian had always been categorized as being loud, daring, and bold in the way he tended to live his life. Though much of this behavior was likely brought about due to his frustration over feeling overlooked among his many siblings, a lot of these tendencies still hold true for Adrian in present day as while he has mellowed in some ways, he has only become more brusque in others. He's not one to sit idly by and just take what he's dealt, standing up for himself and on occasion others. Though he no longer subscribes to the idea that "any attention is good attention";, he can and will fight for something if he's deemed it important enough to him to do so. He wouldn't give up literally everything for just any old cause, but that isn't to say he's completely callous and devoid of empathy. In fact, the opposite is more true for Adrian; seeing those weaker and less fortunate downtrodden on senselessly is something he won't abide by, not when he'd suffered the same for most of his life. He's stubborn, and while he ultimately had to concede when he was forced to flee his kingdom home to return to the harsh climate of the desert, it's something that's stuck in his craw ever since. Rest assured that if he had the capacity to fight back at that time, he would have gladly. In the end though, Misha's well-being mattered more to Adrian than proving a point. Is he bitter over this, and will he likely hold a grudge about it for the rest of his life? Oh yes, he will.

When interacting with others, Adrian tends to express himself very sarcastically, which may lead others to think him to be a know-it-all or someone who doesn't really take things seriously. This isn't true, though whether it's just always been a present aspect of his personality, a result of his chaotic upbringing, or some combination of the two is a bit harder to discern. It's likely more of the latter since Adrian doesn't trust people to have his best interests at heart, so he's better off keeping things light and cautious. Forging strong relationships is sometimes difficult for Adrian due to his personality not being the easiest to always mesh with, particularly for those who might not take too kindly to his sometimes standoffish, sarcastic attitude. He keeps people at arm's length more or less. He prefers a lot of the time to keep to himself, having been burned enough times to feel that investing too much of himself in new relationships is just going to result in further heartache and betrayal down the line. He doesn't trust easily, and tends to be suspicious of the intentions of even the kindest people, always searching carefully for potential hidden motives in an effort to safeguard himself. However, should you manage to break through Adrian's protective veneer, you can at least be rest assured in the fact he isn't going to bullshit you. He's loyal to the very precious few who have ever earned his trust, and while he isn't exactly prone to lavish displays of affection, he isn't going to turn on you baselessly or give you a reason to distrust him, at least not intentionally. He hates people who won't own up to who they are and what they believe in/stand for more than anything, and respects those who do. He doesn't attempt to sugar coat the type of person he is after all, even if that person isn't always pleasant to be around. Adrian also has a temper to go along with his abrasive personality, and he struggles sometimes to keep his cool. He's not going to fly off the handle over childish infractions per-say, but where someone else might just let something go, Adrian might be tempted to keep the argument going, or try to get the last word in if he's feeling especially frustrated. He can't keep his mouth shut sometimes, and that can tend to get him into trouble when dealing with others.

Due to living much of his life alone, Adrian has had to learn to be resourceful not just physically with the way he lives, but in his interactions on a day-to-day basis. As covered in his backstory, what started as acting out as a child when he stole from the market became a necessity. It wasn't something he did because he wanted to, it was because he had to and felt like he had little to no other choice after struggling to find actual work for himself for most of his teenage years. And though he can be a tough pill to swallow for some, he's not going to go out of his way to cause intentional harm to someone else just trying to live their life. However, if things became desperate and it was his own survival versus someone else's? While it would be incorrect to say he would automatically choose himself over another at any point, he isn't the type to blindly throw himself on the tracks for someone he doesn't know. He's going to consider the situation from all angles as opposed to just throwing himself into the fray because it's "the right thing to do". It's not wrong to look after number one, in his opinion, because you're the only person who truly has your back most of the time. He has shown instances of empathy and compassion for others that are rarely openly seen of course, such as his time spent with Misha. It's a side of himself that he keeps well hidden, closely guarded these days. That doesn't mean it's completely disappeared; Adrian has a heart under his prickly exterior.
